Why do we add potassium to IV fluids?
Intravenous solutions containing potassium chloride are particularly intended to provide needed potassium cation (K+). Potassium is the chief cation of body cells (160 mEq/liter of intracellular water). It is found in low concentration in plasma and extracellular fluids (3.5 to 5.0 mEq/liter in a healthy adult).
Why should IV potassium be given slowly?
It sets out maximum strengths, concentrations and rates and preferred products to be used. slow absorption from the Gastrointestinal tract prevents sudden large increases in plasma potassium concentrations. normal saline (see below). If required 10mmol potassium chloride in 10ml normal saline ampoules are available.
