What is considered a close DNA match?
Close family could be an aunt or uncle, niece or nephew, grandparent or grandchild, great-grandparent or great-grandchild, a half sibling, or a double first cousin. Someone who appears in this category is rarely a first cousin.

Can ancestry DNA matches be wrong?
Yes, it is possible for distant DNA matches to be false. It is important to note that a legitimate DNA match can also appear to be false based on not finding genealogical evidence of a connection. DNA segments can get passed down for many, many generations.
How many cM do full siblings share?
Siblings share around 50% of their DNA while half siblings only share around 25%. The amount shared is usually expressed in something called centimorgans. Full siblings tend to share around 3500 centimorgans while half siblings share closer to 1750. You can find those numbers at the bottom of the graphic image.
What is a high cM DNA match?
The more DNA you share with an individual, the more recent your common ancestor was. Centimorgans (cM) are units of genetic linkage between two given individuals. For example, if you share 1800 cM with an individual, that means you share around 25% of your DNA with them. A strong match will have around 200 cM or more.
What is a high number of Centimorgans?
With this in mind, we can define a high cM match as someone who shares at least about 900 centimorgans, or almost 12.5% of our DNA with us. At lower amounts of shared DNA, the relationship possibilities expand greatly, and include more distantly related relatives.
How many DNA segments can you share with a match?
It is possible to share only one DNA segment with someone, or more than a few dozen individual segments. The sum of the genetic length of the DNA segments that you share with a match is reported as the total number of centimorgans (abbreviated as cMs) that you share.
