What is the drug Perjeta used for?
Perjeta (pertuzumab) is a cancer medication that interferes with the growth and spread of cancer cells in the body. Perjeta is used together with other cancer medicines (trastuzumab and docetaxel) to treat HER2-positive breast cancer. Perjeta may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.
Who is eligible for Perjeta?
PERJETA is approved for use in combination with Herceptin® (trastuzumab) and chemotherapy for: use prior to surgery (neoadjuvant treatment) in people with HER2+ locally advanced, inflammatory, or early stage breast cancer (tumor greater than 2 cm in diameter or node-positive).
Why is Perjeta given before Herceptin?
Updated results from the APHINITY trial confirmed that adding Perjeta (chemical name: pertuzumab) to Herceptin (chemical name: trastuzumab) and chemotherapy after surgery for early-stage HER2-positive breast cancer reduces the risk of recurrence (the cancer coming back) and slightly improves survival.
How do you administer Perjeta?
The initial dose of PERJETA is 840 mg administered as a 60-minute intravenous infusion, followed every 3 weeks by a dose of 420 mg administered as an intravenous infusion over 30 to 60 minutes.
Is Perjeta an immunosuppressant?
Perjeta and Herceptin are examples of immune targeted therapy.
Is Perjeta necessary?
Early results from a study suggest that adding Perjeta to Herceptin and chemotherapy after surgery to treat early-stage, HER2-positive breast cancer slightly improves survival; women diagnosed with high-risk, HER2-positive, early-stage disease got more benefits.
How long can you take Perjeta and Herceptin?
You should receive a total of 1 year (up to 18 cycles) of treatment with PERJETA and Herceptin. This includes any PERJETA and Herceptin you may have been given before surgery. Your treatment may be stopped sooner if your side effects become too difficult to manage or if the cancer comes back.
How long does it take for perjeta to get out of your system?
It would take 9.35 days for most of the Herceptin to be removed from your body.
Is Herceptin and PERJETA chemo?
Perjeta is prescribed with Herceptin, another targeted therapy medicine, and chemotherapy. All these medicines are given intravenously, which means they’re delivered directly into your bloodstream through an IV or a port. The first dose of Perjeta is the largest and takes about an hour to complete.
Can you give Herceptin before PERJETA?
Prior to surgery, PERJETA is approved for use in combination with Herceptin® (trastuzumab) and chemotherapy in people with HER2+, locally advanced, inflammatory, or early stage breast cancer (tumor greater than 2 cm in diameter or node-positive).
Is perjeta an immunotherapy?
Immunotherapy with monoclonal antibodies, such as pertuzumab and cetuximab, may help the body’s immune system attack the cancer, and may interfere with the ability of tumor cells to grow and spread.
Is perjeta a monoclonal antibody?
Pertuzumab is a humanized monoclonal antibody targeting HER2 that is different from trastuzumab in that it binds to a different domain of HER2; hence, combining the two drugs leads to a more comprehensive blockade of the receptor.
