What is Medovik made of?
It consists of layers of sponge cake with a cream filling and is often covered with nuts or crumbs made from leftover cake. While the thin layers harden shortly after coming out of the oven, the moisture of the filling softens it again over time.

The layers are made from wafer thin sheets of honey biscuit. In between those layers is a whipped sour cream filling that binds the layers together.

Marlenka is an ancient Armenian honey layered cake with nuts. Similar to ethnic Hungarian honey cakes with a little bit more touch of nuts. It is incredibly popular in Hungary.

When was Medovik invented?
It is believed that the cake first appeared in the 1820s and was initially created for the wife of Alexander I of Russia. The addition of condensed milk probably originates from the Soviet era, while modern variations may include berries or even chocolate.
