What is IOS image in GNS3?
GNS3 offers multiple ways to emulate IOS. For older images, we use and maintain Dynamips; an emulator dedicated to emulate some Cisco hardware. Dynamips can run unmodified IOS images. In the new GNS3 1.4, there is a way to run a second category of switches and routers.
Can I use Cisco IOS on GNS3?
GNS3 can run Cisco IOS. Since Cisco IOS is protected by copyright laws, GNS3 does not include any Cisco IOS in the default installation. It only provides a platform to use Cisco IOS but it does not provide any Cisco IOS itself. It means, to use any Cisco device in GNS3, you have to install that device’s IOS first.
What is Cisco Dynamips?
Dynamips is an emulator computer program that was written to emulate Cisco routers. Dynamips runs on FreeBSD, Linux, Mac OS X or Windows and can emulate the hardware of the Cisco series routing platforms by directly booting an actual Cisco IOS software image into the emulator.
Can I download Cisco IOS free?
Cisco IOS images are copyrighted, you need a CCO log on to the Cisco website (free) and a contract to download them. There are others ways for getting them but advising you of that would be against Cisco’s legal protection and I do a lot with Cisco and so will not suggest them.
What is IOSv?
IOSv is an implementation of Cisco IOS that runs as a full virtual machine. The IOSv images are built from the Cisco IOS M/T train and support up to 16 GigabitEthernet interfaces. IOSv provides full layer-3 control-plane and data-plane functionality.

- In the new version 2.0.
- VMware Workstation 11.1.
- Then select the GNS3 VM.
- Select the storage path for the new GNS3 VM and click on Import.
- It is optional, if you want to change the setting of the new VM click on ‘Edit Virtual Machine Setting’.
- Now Power on the GNS3 VM.
Can GNS3 do switching?
