The ‘Stage 3’ file is a tarball containing a populated directory structure from a basic Gentoo system. Unlike the minimal installation image however, the stage 3 system contains no kernel, only binaries and libraries essential to bootstrapping.

gentoo is not worth the effort if you want to get a server up quickly and easily or think that you will get noticeably better performance. Other distributions (ubuntu, RHEL, CentOS) are easier to set up and operate. gentoo is worth the effort if you want to learn how Linux works below the surface.

How hard is installing Gentoo?
The installation is not hard at all, as long as you can follow directions and are not affraid of commandline. I honestly don’t mind the extra time as Gentoo consistantly runs better than any other distro.
Is Gentoo the fastest?
Gentoo is not a matter of speed, although it can be faster than some others because you can use optimizations when compiling and linking (and you can use SSE3 instruction set if you processor has it), but this doesn’t really improve speed very much.
Is Gentoo better than arch?
The Gentoo packages and base system are built directly from source code according to user-specified USE flags. This generally makes Arch quicker to build and update, and allows Gentoo to be more systemically customizable.
