As the Brundlefly-telepod hybrid exited the receiving pod, Brundle moved the shotgun Veronica was holding to his head, pleading for her to put him out of his misery. Veronica hesitated at first, but mercifully pulled the trigger, killing Brundle and leaving Veronica devastated.

As the mortally wounded Brundlefly-Telepod fusion creature crawled out of the prototype Telepod, he begged Veronica to end his suffering with Borans’ shotgun by placing the barrel against his own head. A devastated Veronica hesitated for a moment, and then pulled the trigger, mercifully blasting Brundlefly’s head off.
How does Brundle begin to mentally transform?
When he unwittingly entered a telepod along with a housefly, the two organisms got fused together at a genetic level. His gradual transformation into a repulsive man/fly hybrid was accompanied by increasing mental instability.
How does Brundlefly eat?
So like a fly, Brundlefly breaks down solids with a corrosive enzyme, playfully called “vomit drop”. He regurgitates on his food, it liquefies, and then he sucks it back up.

While Cronenberg’s script did not end with Veronica Quaife giving birth, it did end with a coda which revealed that she was pregnant with a normal baby, conceived by Borans after Brundle’s death (and the abortion of Brundle’s possibly tainted fetus).
