Is it better to paint Ikea furniture before or after assembly?
The Basic Makeover Procedure It’s fine to paint Ikea furniture after it has been assembled, but if you’re looking for a truly professional makeover on something you just purchased, it’s better to paint before you start working through the hieroglyphics in the assembly manual.
Do you need to sand TARVA before painting?
Make sure that there are no loose wood splinters popping up and it’s free of dust. Another thing to note is that TARVA comes with pre-drilled holes in the front so if you want to change the handles to pulls or any other shaped handles, you have to use wood filler to fill them in and sand them down before you paint.

Start by removing all the drawers and making sure their aren’t any rough spots in the wood. My dresser was pretty smooth so there wasn’t a need for sanding it, but feel free to sand it before you get started if you want.

One gallon can of paint will cover up to 400 square feet, which is enough to cover a small room like a bathroom. Two gallon cans of paint cover up to 800 square feet, which is enough to cover an average size room. This is the most common amount needed, especially when considering second coat coverage.

If you look at the nightstand you can see that there is a piece of trim that goes around the bottom, by the legs. This trim piece is 1.75 inches tall. I started out and measured down on each of the legs 1.75 inches. I knew that I wanted the top of the legs to be square to match the trim piece of the nightstand.

Lay down your tarp, and begin coating the dresser evenly with the paint making sure to go with the grain of the wood. It’s best to add the paint in thin coats to avoid drips. Just make sure you wait for the paint to dry completely in between coats! It took us two rounds of painting to cover the wood.

It turns out that Ikea’s Tarva line is actually a great bargain option. The pieces are made of unfinished pine, unlike their fiberboard counterparts, which means they can be stained or painted to your liking. Dressers can be customized further by upgrading the nobs to whatever you’d like.
