What do we know about Lindow Man? Lindow Man’s discovery led unprecedented scientific research. Naked except for a fox-fur armband, he was 1.73m tall and weighed 64kg. He was around 25 years old when he died.
What did Lindow Man look like?
Appearance: A leathery skin with a yellowish hue and wrinkles clearly visible. His head, distorted over time, gives his face a slumped appearance with an anguished expression. Unusually for a bog body, Lindow Man sported a beard and moustache trimmed with shears.

Why was Lindow Man a sacrifice?
Lindow Man’s body is possibly contemporary with the Claudian Roman invasion of Britain so he may have been an important member of a local tribe who was chosen or volunteered to die to protect his people from the invaders. Alternatively, he may have been a sacrifice to ensure a good harvest or safe winter.
Why is the Lindow Man so well preserved?
It formed after the last ice age, one of many such peat bogs in north-east Cheshire and the Mersey basin that formed in hollows caused by melting ice. Lindow Moss is a lowland raised mire; this type of peat bog often produces the best preserved bog bodies, allowing more detailed analysis.
Who found Windeby girl?
A violent demise was thought to be the case for a mummy known as Windeby Girl, studied by Dr. Gill-Robinson. Discovered in northern Germany in 1952, experts thought she may have been an adulteress whose head was shaved, after which she was blindfolded and drowned in the bog.

The oldest known bog body is the skeleton of Koelbjerg Man from Denmark, who has been dated to 8000 BCE, during the Mesolithic period. The oldest fleshed bog body is that of Cashel Man, who dates to 2000 BCE during the Bronze Age.
