How often are ureteral stents exchanged?
Your stent will need to be replaced about every 3 to 6 months. Your healthcare provider will tell you when it needs to be changed. Leaving your stent in place for too long can lead to: Your ureter becoming blocked.
What happens if a stent is left in too long?
If left in place for too long, a stent can become encrusted with a “crystal” (stone-like) coating on its surface. This does not normally cause problems although it may worsen some urinary side-effects (especially pain & bleeding).

Forgotten ureteral stents can cause a spectrum of complications ranging from hematuria, stent occlusion, migration, fragmentation, encrustation, and stone formation to serious complications like recurrent urinary tract infection (UTI), urinary tract obstruction, and renal failure [5], [6].

What is a ureteral stent? A ureteral stent is a small, soft, tube about 10 – 12 inches long and about as big around as a coffee swizzle stick (see picture above, on left). It is placed in the ureter, which is the muscular tube that drains urine from the kidney to the bladder (see picture above, on right).

In females, the strings will be taped together hanging outside your urethra or tucked inside of the vagina. The strings will allow you to remove the thin flexible stent while you are at home. Normally, the stent can be removed 3-5 days after your procedure. Your doctor will direct you when to remove the stent.

They’ll use the cystoscope to find the opening where your ureter connects to your bladder. Once they can see this opening, your healthcare provider will thread a ureteral stent through the cystoscope and into your ureter. After the stent is in place, the cystoscope will be removed.

Placement of a RNUS can be performed by two main methods. The first method is placement of the stent from an antegrade approach by obtaining a direct access to the pelvicaliceal system. This is followed by placement a nephroureteral stent, once successfully negotiating the ureteral segment and entering the conduit.
