How does siporax work?
Siporax gives beneficial bacteria millions of tiny surfaces to colonize. It takes time but as your beneficial bacterium grow your nitrates will come down. This is how you use Siporax. The downside is it does not come with any bacteria on it.
How does seachem matrix work?
How does Seachem Matrix work? Seachem Matrix works like any other bio media. It provides surface area for bacteria to grow on in order to convert ammonia to nitrite and nitrite to nitrate. Anaerobic/anoxic bacteria are the types that convert nitrate into harmless nitrogen – denitrification.
What is an aquarium bio filter?
Biological filters enable bacterial colonies to propagate and break down wastes. Biological filtration is the action of bacteria in the tank breaking down dangerous ammonia, converting them to nitrites, and then the nitrites to the less toxic nitrates.
How do ceramic aquarium filters work?
Ceramic rings are biological media that provides a very large surface area for beneficial bacteria to grow and live. This bacteria on your ceramic rings is required to complete the Nitrogen Cycle in your tank, which converts harmful ammonia and nitrite in to the less harmful nitrate.
What type of aquarium filter is best?

Can you use too much seachem Matrix?
You can either use half or all of it, I don’t think you can overdose: it’s just biomedia for bacteria to colonize. I suspect you can put it almost anywhere in the sump where it will get decent flow.
Does seachem matrix remove nitrates?
This allows Matrix™, unlike other forms of biomedia, to remove nitrate along with ammonia and nitrite, simultaneously and in the same filter. Since the majority of the bacteria are internal, Matrix™ may be rinsed when needed without damaging the filter. Matrix™ is compatible with all types of wet or wet-dry filters.
Can you cycle a tank without a filter?
With the use of starter bacteria products, cycling time can be shortened to a week plus. After filling the tank, we recommend letting the tank soak for a couple of days without running the filter. Do a 90% water change and dose another dose of starter bacteria culture. Wait a day and take ammonia/nitrate readings.
Can I put a sponge in my filter?
Yes, it’s totally possible to use a regular sponge as an aquarium filter. In fact, many people have done so successfully for years. However, not all sponges can be used as aquarium filter sponges. In fact, some can poison and kill all your fish.
