How does a 4MOTION work?
The Volkswagen 4MOTION® AWD uses sensors to detect road conditions, driving behavior, and any wheel slippage. If there are any abnormalities, the system is able to adjust the amount of power sent to each of the axles, giving you as much traction as possible.
Is 4MOTION permanent 4 wheel drive?

This is why 4MOTION is considered to be a permanently engaged four-wheel-drive system. The distribution of power to all four wheels becomes active before wheelspin occurs.
What is the difference between 4MOTION and AWD?
Volkswagen 4MOTION® AWD is a more efficient version of standard AWD and includes some great features of both AWD and 4WD. It still detects which tires need more power based on which ones are getting the most traction, but the 4MOTION® AWD system also uses a special feature of 4WD.
How good is 4MOTION?
We’d recommend choosing 4MOTION in some circumstances, but it’s not ideal for everyone. It’s useful if you live somewhere that regularly experiences bad weather and slippery roads. It also tends to improve a car’s towing capacity, so it’s a good choice if you regularly tow a caravan or a large trailer.
Does 4MOTION have low range?
The Ultimate can be had with full-time 4X4, called Permanent 4Motion. Only the part-time 4X4 system has low-range (2.72:1); full-time 4X4 is single-range only. Full-time 4X4 gives a huge safety benefit on all roads, particularly in wet or icy conditions.
Can I turn off 4MOTION?
Simplest way is to go under the car and just to pull the plug off the controller. The ESP light will stay on. It is also disabled if the handbrake is applied but obviously that’s not really a solution unless you can pull the handbrake enough for the light to come on but not enough so the rear brakes are binding.
How do I know if my VW is 4MOTION?
Just peek under the rear of the car and see if there’s a diff (or driveshaft). If yes, 4Motion. If no, front wheel drive.
Are Quattro and 4MOTION the same?
