How do you Recane a canoe seat?
Steps:
- Clean old cane and spline out of seat carefully.
- Place cane and spline in water to soak.
- Place the block of wood in the center of the seat.
- Place cane over block centering it on the seat.
- With a blunt instrument, tap in the corners of the cane.
How much webbing do I need for a canoe seat?
A canoe seat is a lot smaller than a lawn chair seat. I use 1.5″ webbing for my seats. It’s worked out well.

Untrimmed seats (available as wood-cane or wood-webbing) range from 32″ to 41″ depending on the manufacturer, but can easily be cut to fit your canoe using the old seat as a template.
What do you need to replace a chair with pressed cane?
This is a replacement kit for recaning a chair that has “pressed” cane in it, which means it must have a groove or channel around the area to be replaced. This kit will not be suitable for chairs that have drilled holes. A few household items will be needed to complete a finished seat such as a small amount of glue and a straight slot screwdriver.
