Having only two anti-psychotic pills left, he kept them for the day GLaDOS would wake Chell. Consequently, he slowly lost his sanity, his schizophrenia completely taking him over.
How did Rattman survive?
Prior to the events of Portal while GLaDOS began flooding the entire facility with neurotoxin, Rattmann is the only known employee to have survived. A paranoid schizophrenic, he is dependent on anti-psychotic medication as a means of keeping him sane.

How did Wheatley survive?
As the duo approaches, she rises and immediately recognizes Chell. She then has Chell sent back into the Testing Tracks through the Incinerator Room. Wheatley survives the incident, and the official Valve guide explains that he managed to reactivate himself through the use of a spare core.
