Can you surf in Mendocino?
Experienced surfers can find the best places to surf in Mendocino in nearby Point Arena. An underwater reef here creates surfable waves near the Point Arena Pier. Smuggler’s Cove just south of Mendocino and Virgin Beach, just north of Fort Bragg are also good surf spots for intermediate surfers.

How do you get down to Bowling Ball Beach?
You have to park up on Highway 1 and then take a hike down to the beach area. Not easy to reach as the trail has been eroded and you have to climb down a make shift ladder (see pictures). We got there a little too late after low tide and several of the rock “bowling balls” were covered up but still a great beach.
Is Usal Beach Open?
This is a seasonal area that is only open March through October typically. Usal Beach used to be popular with Jeep and 4×4 clubs because of this rugged drive and the ability to drive right onto the beach, but driving on the beach is no longer allowed and citations are issued to those that ignore the rules.
