Can you Serge Minky fabric?
Minky is a knit and will require a higher Differential Feed (DF) when sewing on a serger. I use either 1.5 for sewing along the selvage and 2 for sewing on the cross stretch. To sew cotton and minky together you will need a slightly smaller size piece for minky then cotton because of the fabric stretching.
What needle do you use for Minky?
90/14 stretch needle
We recommend using a 90/14 stretch needle (we love SCHMETZ needles) when sewing with minky fabrics. Let’s explain. Minky fabric is a knit, so using a stretch needle will help prevent making holes in the fabric and it helps prevent skipped stitches.

Interfacing: Do not use fusible interfacing as minky cannot be pressed. If the design requires reinforcement to install snaps or grommets, add a piece of grosgrain ribbon between fabric layers so the snaps or grommets do not pull out. Thread: Polyester or cotton threads are appropriate for this fabric.

Should I use batting with Minky?
Do you use Batting with your minky? I do use batting! My current favorite is Quilter’s Dream Orient batting, but any low-loft batting will do just fine! You can even leave out the batting if you want to go for a thinner quilt.
How do you sew Minky fabric without stretching?
When sewing minky with another layer of fabric such as cotton or flannel, put the minky on the bottom to allow the feed dogs of the machine to help guide the fabric and prevent extra stretching. Remember that minky has a nap (direction of the fabric pile) and to position it the way you would like it lay.
Can you spray baste Minky?
I prefer to use Spray Baste when quilting with minky because it really does not stay put in place without it! Click here to read my Spray Baste Comparison to find the right spray for you! After basting both layers of the quilt completely with spray, I also add in a handful of curved safety pins for good measure!
Why are Minky blankets so soft?
Minky blankets stay softer much longer than typical blankets. They’re 100% polyester, which is thicker and plusher than fleece, which is what most blankets are made from. This more durable fabric means your blanket will stay just as soft and warm as the day you brought it home.
