Are Eon still fitting smart meters?
We’re continuing to undertake contactless smart meter installations for our customers, where possible. We continue to follow latest guidance at all times. If you have an appointment scheduled during the lockdown period, this can go ahead as planned.
How long does it take to install a smart meter Eon?
The installation takes about one hour per meter start to finish, so two hours if you have an electricity and gas meter.
Are smart meters installed inside or outside?
Yes, that’s right. We’ll take your old meters away and put them in the same place as your existing ones. You can place your Smart energy display where it’s convenient for you and where it gets a good signal from the Smart meter.
How long does it take to get a smart meter installed?
It can take up to 3 hours to install smart meters for both gas and electricity. If you’re only having a smart meter for electricity installed, that will take between 1 to 1.5 hours. As part of the installation process, the engineer will need to switch off your gas and electricity supply for about 20 minutes each.
What type of smart meters are EON fitting?
From the end of 2018, we started to roll out second-generation SMETS2 smart meters, which mean you’ll stay smart even if you switch. But, don’t worry if you have one of our SMETS1 meters we’ll simply update your meter remotely to ensure it operates as a SMETS2 meter.

Do smart meters need WiFi?
No. Smart meters use an entirely separate, bespoke wireless system. You don’t need Wi-Fi in your home for it to work and it won’t use your Wi-Fi if you have it. Your smart meter and in-home display communicate via a secure national network which is solely for smart meters.
