Personally, it’s because they embody the idea of a Special Snowflake character. Drow, as a society, are evil bastards. Only Drizzt is known to have come out from the Underdark and behave like a civilized being.

FR Novels. According to Bob Salvatore’s various underdark novels, dark elves get by just fine on mostly domesticated meat breeds (like the Rothe mentioned by SPavel, each about twice the size of a yak), insects and reptiles, fish, fungi, and fermented spirits.
Is the Underdark a different plane?
For context, in my own homebrew universe, I’ve decided that the Underdark is in fact another plane, although it is accessible from the Material Plane via certain tunnels and such that are like subtle portals (similar to Fey Crossings).
